Before and after

Loree just posted an incredible retrospective of what her garden looked like back in 2005 when she purchased her house. She encouraged other bloggers to post photos of what their yards looked like when they moved in and how they look now. I don't have a lot of photos of the yard from the first year I was in the house because I was completely focused on the interior so I'll have to settle for two years ago in most cases.

Looking across the back yard then:

Looking at the back of the garage, south toward the side yard before (as we tore off the shed):

And after:

And the front yard after (the new paint job is the real star here):

I've been going on a lot of garden tours and lamenting that the thing that makes a garden look the best is time. Time for shrubs and trees to mature and for plants to settle in. Looking at the before pictures is a good salve for this impatient mind. Anybody else have any good before and afters of their garden?

  1. Such a transformation...I forgot you had that huge concrete slab in the back...and the little "shedling" attached to the house! Waiting is the hardest part...I look back at old photos of the garden and can hardly believe what a difference a few years makes. Can't wait to see what you do with the other side of your front yard ;-)

  2. Holy crap in my pants your yard looks awesome! I could do before (NOTHING) and after (little baby plants) for the front yard, but seeing as we planted about 10 days ago, I'm assuming there is little visible growth :)

  3. WOW...just two years? While yes the paint job is huge, I think getting rid of the Arborvitae blinders was amazingly significant...and those shrubs against the house too. I have to make sure my husband doesn't see this before and after or else he would be out there ripping out the shrubs in front of our house.

At the rate you're making improvements I can't even imagine what you're place is gonna look like in a couple of years. I see an HPSO open garden in your future.

  5. Even two years makes such a difference! It looks fabulous - I've posted some pics on my site, but I only have about 10 months in. But looking at both yours and Loree's pics really got me excited - I can only hope mine looks as fabulous in the coming years!

  7. Yes, time will make things better and better, but what a start! Looking back is the best way to see how far we've come...thanks to Loree, the great kick-starter.
