I was reading some snarky garden article the other day about the overuse of salvia by landscape designers and I looked out into my yard in horror . . . you guys, I have SO much salvia. In my defense, I was sent 21 of them by High Country Gardens in
the weirdest order mix-up ever, but I've still got a lot that are my doing.
|
Salvia sylvestris 'Blue Hill' |
I love them and the bees love them. And they smell so good and sweaty. 'Caradonna' and 'May Night' are still going and will go on all summer.
|
Salvia 'Indigo Spires' is just getting going |
But the most exciting thing right now is that my Yucca recurvifolia bloomed! Hot damn.
|
Lilium martagon 'Arabian Night' |
|
Helenium 'Mardi Gras' |
|
Eremurus 'Lemon Meringue' are just finishing up |
|
Verbascum epixanthium |
|
Fuschia magellanica 'Hawkshead' |
|
Scabiosa caucasica 'Fama Blue' |
|
Asclepias speciosa |
|
Penstemon x 'Enor' |
|
Agastache aurantica 'Navajo Sunset' |
|
Callicarpa bodinieri 'Profusion' |
|
Papaver 'Drama Queen' |
|
Papaver hybridium 'Lauren's Grape' |
|
Verbena boariensis |
|
Clarkia amoena 'Aurora' |
|
Agrostemma githago |
This summer has really snuck up on me . . . I feel like I'll be putting the garden to bed for winter if I don't stop and enjoy things. Happy bloom day and thank you to
our host Carol!
No! Don't say the "W" word! Your yucca bloom is amazing, I never will understand why some people don't like them.
ReplyDeleteYour blooms are glorious and I also love salvia, the more the merrier! Happy GBBD
ReplyDeleteI know I shouldn't be swinging that word around. Summer hasn't even started! And I agree--the foliage on agaves is good enough, but then there's that bloom spike on top of it?!
ReplyDeleteYep, the color matches the real life (on my computer screen, at least). It's a good one, from Xera.
ReplyDeleteHappy bloom day!
ReplyDeleteSome very nice blooms and colours you have in your garden Heather! And don't fret too much about the salvias, they are very nice. Happily ignore the rule makers on this one :)
ReplyDeleteLovely! I wish someone would send me 21 plants by mistake.... I also like your Eremurus!
ReplyDeleteI was just reading , you can have too many daisies in July/Aug . I think you're Ok with Salvias .
ReplyDeleteOh whew! Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteI bought that one last year and it happily reseeded. I'm so glad--it's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely not complaining! It was weird but mostly good.
ReplyDeleteWhat publication was that? I don't know that many people who grow daisies.
ReplyDeleteSalvias are salivatingly cool. So there. Love all your pics!
ReplyDeleteOMG...I adore Salvias...if I could grow them, I would have a million! I've even been thinking of getting another 'Amistad'! The color of 'Enor' is amazing...I could stare at that all day :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of elitist fool looks down his nose at salvia? If rivers of Salvia are good enough for Piet Oudolf, they are good enough for me. Yours look good! Also the purple penstemon and orange agastache, both very exotic to my midwestern eyes. Looking forward to meeting you at the Fling!
ReplyDeleteEnor is aging to a dark purple super fast, too. The color was noticeably different this morning. I'll ping you if Amistad is at my Fred Meyer the next time I'm there.
ReplyDeleteAmen! I can't wait to meet you (and the elusive Judy!) too!
ReplyDeleteOkay, only because I was defeated in sowing this verbascum from seed do I point out that you've labeled it an echium. I can't believe you have V. epixanthium! I've read it described as having wavy furry chartreuse leaves. I hope it's available somewhere close to the fling activities. I'm going to need an extra suitcase...Love your taste in plants, including all those salvias. Definitely not overused around here.
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely correct--thank you for catching that! My friend Ryan grew it from seed--we should see if he has more to send home with you . . .
ReplyDeleteSuch a great photo of Hawkshead. I thought for sure mine died, but it may be that thing that I nearly dug up when I was weeding the other day.
ReplyDeleteYour 'Drama Queen' has every reason to strut her stuff.
My SIL gave me Hawkshead, something I normally wouldn't pick out myself. I love it!
ReplyDeleteI only have one tiny salvia plant. Seeing your pics, though, makes me want to get more. They are lovely.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to walk up there and take a peek in person one of these evenings. I'll bring your some black poppy seeds to add to your collection. I love all the blooms and spectacular color your garden is sporting right now. And, whomever made that crack about salvias is a fool - at least in my book!
ReplyDeleteThey're so tough, too.
ReplyDeleteDo it! And I'll snip off a seedpod of Drama Queen for you.
ReplyDeleteYeay!
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't think anyone else has commented on it, but I'm digging the Eremurus. In fact, I'd never even heard of it until now. (Shh. Don't tell anyone I'm such an ignoramus on Foxtail Lilies.)
ReplyDeleteDoes it need any special care in your neighborhood? Does it bloom a long time? And does it attract any pollinators? (I'm always full of questions!) :P
Eremurus needs good drainage and full sun to be happy. I ordered mine from Brent and Becky's and planted them a little proud. Almost all of them bloomed. Bees like them, though not as much as the salvias.
ReplyDeleteCan one ever have too many salvias? No, I don't believe so. But I'm intrigued by your description of their scent as "sweaty." Hmm. Minty, yes. But do you mean gym-locker sweaty or what? I am so curious! http://www.penick.net/digging/
ReplyDeleteThey have that funky sagey smell to them. It smells like clean sweat to me. :)
ReplyDeleteLovely! I got nuthin', so I had to photograph my neighbor's yard. Just a tangle of weeds here, and a few allium heads left over.
ReplyDeleteWeeds are blooms! :)
