Our gardens are a landscaper’s worst nightmare. I don’t think the Houzz community will be as kind as they were about the interior! A note: there are a lot of pots and debris in the photo because we’re still in planting season.
Before:
After. Our gardens are designed primarily for pollinators, thus we rely heavily on blooming perennials. We use no chemicals or pesticides and all of our weeding is done by hand. Our yard was certified as “Backyard Habitat” by the Audubon Society.

The backyard fence fell down the day I took ownership of the house. There were a few shrubs and some clumps of bamboo but it was otherwise a blank slate.
Our primary objective in the backyard is PRIVACY. We border four houses and have been impatiently waiting for our shrubs to grow.

We disconnected out downspouts, so all rain water stays on site. We have a rain garden in front and in back.

My partner and I can’t agree on where we’d like permanent structures like a deck to go, so in the meantime we’ve used a mix of concrete retaining wall stones and local rock to edge the garden beds. Once we can decide on a plan, we’ll either DIY it or hire professionals.
