Garden bloggers’ bloom day June 2014

I was reading some snarky garden article the other day about the overuse of salvia by landscape designers and I looked out into my yard in horror . . . you guys, I have SO much salvia. In my defense, I was sent 21 of them by High Country Gardens in the weirdest order mix-up ever, but I’ve still got a lot that are my doing.

    Salvia sylvestris ‘Blue Hill’

I love them and the bees love them. And they smell so good and sweaty. ‘Caradonna‘ and ‘May Night‘ are still going and will go on all summer.
Salvia ‘Indigo Spires’ is just getting going
But the most exciting thing right now is that my Yucca recurvifolia bloomed! Hot damn.
    Lilium martagon ‘Arabian Night’
    Helenium ‘Mardi Gras’
Eremurus ‘Lemon Meringue’ are just finishing up
    Verbascum epixanthium
    Fuschia magellanica ‘Hawkshead’

    Scabiosa caucasica ‘Fama Blue’

    Asclepias speciosa

    Penstemon x ‘Enor’

    Agastache aurantica ‘Navajo Sunset’

    Callicarpa bodinieri ‘Profusion’

    Papaver ‘Drama Queen’

    Papaver hybridium ‘Lauren’s Grape’

    Verbena boariensis

    Clarkia amoena ‘Aurora’

    Agrostemma githago

This summer has really snuck up on me . . . I feel like I’ll be putting the garden to bed for winter if I don’t stop and enjoy things. Happy bloom day and thank you to our host Carol!

  • Garden bloggers’ bloom day, May 2014

Garden bloggers’ bloom day, May 2014

Man, I totally get why Carol dreams of May. I was looking at my garden today thinking, Do I have too many flowers? Is it too much? I just checked last year’s entry and some things are late to bloom, like my Geranium ‘Rozanne’ and my Verbascum bombyciferum ‘Arctic Snow,’ but everything else is right on schedule. I’m going to try and limit my listings here to things that are new or particularly nice looking right now.
Camassia quamash, the straight species, blooms later than ‘Blue Danube’

    Spiraea betulifolia var. lucida

    Aquilegia chrysantha ‘Flore Pleno’

Nicotiana alata ‘Lime green’ and Viburnum plicatum ‘Watanabe’ (I think)

    Lessertia montana

    Allium jesdianum ‘Early Emperor’

    Allium schubertii

    Deschampsia flexuosa

    Geum triflorum

    Camassia leichtlinii

    Amsonia hubrichtii

    Unknown sedum

    Thalictrum ‘Black Stockings’

    Disporum cantoniense ‘Night Heron’

    Salvia ‘Flame’

    Lonicera ‘Major Wheeler’

Ceanothus thyrsiflorus has a washed out color that I don’t love but the bees seem to.

    Salvia ‘May Night’

    Dichelostemma ida-maia

    Cotula hispidula and Lewisia cotyledon

    Allium christophii
Salvia ‘Amistad’ died this winter so I bought a replacement. Totally worth it.

    Angelica taiwaniana

Whew! Thanks for hosting Carol. Summer is practically upon us; I guess I should think about mulching soon?

  • Garden bloggers’ bloom day April 2014

Garden bloggers’ bloom day April 2014

Note to self: everything that was blooming last year at this time is blooming now.

With our crazy winter, my garden’s timing is a little off from last year. My camassia and lewisia were a tiny bit later than last year to bloom.

    Camassia leichtlinii ‘Blue Danube’
While my Salvia ‘Caradonna’ May Night is blooming earlier than it did last year.

I have some new introductions, like this Pacific Coast iris.

Iris x pacifica ‘The Eyes Have It’
    Geranium renardii and Tulipa ‘Flair’
    Fothergilla ‘Jane Platt’

    Geranium phaeum ‘Darkest of All’

A very happy bloom day to you! Thanks to our host, Carol. To those of you still under snow, why haven’t you moved here yet? I’m feeling for you.

  • Garden bloggers’ bloom day March 2014

Garden bloggers’ bloom day March 2014

    Better late than never edition.
When we hit single digit temperatures in December my Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata’ was badly burned and lost almost every single leaf. It produced buds where the leaves dropped off. I am a HUGE fan of this. More blooms? Go ahead and lose your leaves every winter, girl.
My Daphne odora ‘Mae Jima’ bloomed for the first time, too!

    Arctostaphylos bakeri ‘Louis Edmonds’

    Pieris japonica
    The hellebores are still going.

    Euphorbia ‘Blackbird’

    Euphobia myrsinites

After this we really get rolling. April is one my very favorite months in the garden! Happy bloom day, a little bit late! Thanks for hosting, Carol!

  • Garden bloggers’ bloom day February 2014

Garden bloggers’ bloom day February 2014

I’ve always felt that February is the cruelest month. The only bright side is that it’s also the shortest. Thank goodness for bright spots like crocuses.

    Crocus chrysanthus ‘Romance’

    Mahonia ‘Underway’

Helleborus x ballardiae ‘HGC Pink Frost’

    Sarcococca ruscifolia

The last of the blooms are clinging to Mahonia x media ‘Arthur Menzies’, which got pretty beat up by the snow.

I’m so ready for spring and more blooms. I think the hummingbirds are too, they’re sick of fighting over my slim pickings.

Happy bloom day! Be sure to check out the fun over at May Dreams Garden.

Garden bloggers’ bloom day January 2014

    “Thank goodness for Mahonia” edition.

I don’t have a lot blooming right now but my Mahonia ‘Arthur Menzies’ is putting in overtime, making sure that every hummingbird in the neighborhood has a food source to fight over. I love this shrub and it’s been blooming for over a month now.

My Mahonia ‘Charity’ hasn’t bloomed and doesn’t look inclined to, but a recently acquired Mahonia ‘Underway’ is just starting to bloom.

Just one hellebore has started blooming . . . the others are almost there.

    Helleborus x ballardiae ‘Cinnamon Snow’

While I don’t have a ton blooming right now, I couldn’t be more delighted. Every day that goes by means more sunlight and every month will bring more and more blooms! How lucky are we?

Happy bloom day and thank you Carol of May Dream Gardens for hosting!

  • Garden bloggers’ bloom day October 2013

Garden bloggers’ bloom day October 2013

The blooms are in there somewhere.

How about the coloring on that dogwood?

I told the insulation installers that I would murder them if they harmed my babies so they staged my yard like a murder scene.

Touche, Neil Kelly. Touche. Be sure to check out real posts of real flowers at May Dream Gardens. Thank you, Carol!

  • Garden bloggers’ bloom day August 2013

Garden bloggers’ bloom day August 2013

Portlandia filmed at our house two summers ago. They seem to need a lot of houses for filming, especially ones that are sort of run down, like ours. Periodically we get a call about filming and I’ve turned them down because the filming was so stressful for me and the crew made me feel so unhip. I got a series of calls this week because their producer thought our house would be perfect . . . .

. . . for putting a hot tub on the lawn. I’m not going to lie, that didn’t feel great. Of course the last time they were here, our house looked like this. Actually, it was summer, so the lawn was brown.

So I get it. Lots of lawn space and a slightly dilapidated house that could conceivably shelter people who would put a hot tub on it. Regardless, I had to tell them that we don’t have a lawn anymore! We have a garden! And boy do we have a lot of blooms this month.

Zauschneria ‘Mattole Select,’  Coreopsis ‘Moonbeam,’ Verbascum bombyciferum ‘Arctic Snow’

The cannas are still blooming like crazy, along with every grass and flower in the meadow.

Gaillardia grandiflora ‘Arizona Sun’ likes it hot and sunny, just like this castor bean.

    Muhlenbergia rigens
    Salvia ‘Amistad’
    Salvia ‘Black and Blue’

    Dalea purpurea
Geranium ‘Rozanne’ will never stop blooming.

Sunflower ‘Lemon Queen’ is winking at you

Agastache ‘Ava’ is another one that starts blooming and never stops.

    Rudbeckia hirta

    Erigeron glaucus ‘Wayne Roderick’

    Achnatherum hymenoides (Indian Ricegrass)

Panicum ‘Northwind’ which I always call ‘Swiftwind’, which was She-Ra’s horse.

    Clematis jackmanii

    Gaultheria hispidula (Creeping snowberry) flowers

    Creeping snowberry fruits

    Sedum telephium ‘Hab Gray’

    Chasmanthium latifolium (Northern Sea Oats)

We got this NOID zinnia from a packet of seeds that we got upon entrance to the Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam.

Verbena bonariensis and ‘Gateway’ Joe Pye Weed

    Sesleria autumnalis

Lots of blooms means lots of pollinators right now. If only they’d called saying, “We need a house with bees! Lots of bees!”

But sadly, they didn’t say any of that. If you need me I’ll be nursing my hurt feelings, drinking a PBR in skinny jeans. Ironically.

Bloom day is hosted by Carol at May Dreams Gardens. Be sure to stop by and check out what everyone else has blooming. Thank you, Carol!
