Garden bloggers’ bloom day October 2012

The rains are finally here! Not everyone is happy about it but I’m selfish and sick of watering the garden. I’m also eager to finally get the ground softened so I can plant these guys:

I snapped most of these last week, right before the rain kicked in.

Salvia ‘Black and Blue’
Mexican milkweed Asclepias curassavica

Greg’s father gave us what he dubbed “screaming orange” crocosmia in July. They got in the ground late so they bloomed late . . . I wish I could do that every year. They are so hard to photograph but they are the most fantastic yellow-orange-red combo.

The yellow Coreopsis ‘Moonbeam’ and orange Zauschneria californica ‘Wayne’s Select’ are still blooming like crazy.

Okay, this isn’t a bloom so much as a fruit, but my creeping snowberry (Symphoricarpos mollis) is gorgeous right now.

Happy bloom day, y’all! Head over to Carol’s to see the rest of the show.

Every time I see Zauchneria in a garden I wonder why I don't have one. Your 'Wayne's Select' looks like an excellent candidate for Longview Ranch. And, I AM grudgingly grateful for Friday's rain after I managed a ton of planting on Saturday due to the softened soil. An every-other-day rain schedule could suit me perfectly.

That Zauschneria apparently self-seeds, so if Linda doesn't have seedlings for you next spring, I will! I always wish it would rain at night and then be clear during the day, though I like your plan too.

I'm mega-jealous that your 'Ava' is still upright! After our rain on Friday, mine pretty much collapsed. You've really got me considering adding some of that Coreopsis next spring…loving it in your garden. BTW…the long shadows that the burial mounds are casting right now are VERY season-appropriate 😉

The Agastache 'Ava' definitely looks more weighted today with the rain, but it's still pretty darn upright. I'll divide my coreopsis next spring and give you half. 🙂

I think "screaming orange" Crocosmia is a perfect name and one you should just stick with. Did you get your Asclepias curassavica from Annie's or find it somewhere locally?

Yep, that milkweed came from Annie's. I've never seen it locally but then I've never really gone looking for it, either.

Your snowberry is gorgeous. I have the common snowberry and it pales (so to speak) by comparison.

It was hard to find photos online of creeping snowberry; it seems like not many people have it.
